Weekly Hot Tub Maintenance Checklist

Weekly Hot Tub Maintenance Checklist

A short weekly routine is easier than rescuing neglected spa water. The goal is to catch sanitizer, filtration, scum, foam and balance problems early without adding products that the water does not need.

Test the water consistently

Check the sanitizer and the water-balance parameters recommended for your spa system. Testing on a consistent schedule makes trends easier to recognize.

Record unusual readings when you make a larger adjustment so you know what changed the next time the water behaves differently.

Inspect the filter and circulation

Look for reduced flow, debris or a filter that is due for rinsing or service. Cloudy water often becomes a chemical problem only after a filtration problem was ignored.

Follow the spa manufacturer's filter-cleaning and replacement schedule.

Clean the waterline and cover

Wipe away early scum before it becomes a heavy ring. Keep the underside of the cover and other contact surfaces clean according to the manufacturer's care instructions.

Reducing residue on surfaces helps keep it from returning to the water.

Look for changes, not perfection

A new odor, more foam, a scum line or slower clarity recovery after use can be early signs that bather load or contaminants are outpacing the routine.

Use those observations to decide whether you need cleaning, a filter service, a targeted product or eventually a drain and refill.

Weekly checklist

  • Test sanitizer and water balance.
  • Inspect circulation and the filter.
  • Remove debris.
  • Wipe the waterline.
  • Check for foam, scum or unusual odor.
  • Review whether recent heavy use requires extra attention.

Bottom line: A consistent inspection-and-test routine prevents more problems than automatically adding a long list of weekly chemicals.

Follow the product label and the equipment manufacturer's instructions for your specific pool, spa or cold-plunge system.
