Why Is My Pool Water Cloudy?
Cloudy pool water is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The right fix depends on whether the problem is filtration, water balance, sanitation, fine suspended particles or another contaminant.
What to check first
- Test the water. Check the parameters required by your sanitizer and pool system before adding another treatment.
- Inspect filtration. Confirm circulation is normal and the filter is not overloaded or overdue for cleaning.
- Look at recent events. Heavy use, storms, debris or a large chemical adjustment can all change water clarity.
Clarifier or flocculant?
A pool clarifier helps fine particles become easier for the filter to capture. A flocculant is a more aggressive cleanup tool that gathers particles so they can settle and be removed. They are not interchangeable, and neither fixes poor sanitation or a failing filter.

When to step back
If the pool remains cloudy after basic water balance, sanitation and filtration issues are corrected, stop adding products blindly. Retest and identify the remaining cause before the next treatment.
