Low Pool Stabilizer / CYA

Pool stabilizer is also called cyanuric acid or CYA. In outdoor pools it helps protect chlorine from being broken down by sunlight. If CYA is too low, chlorine can disappear faster than expected.

Signs that low stabilizer may be part of the problem

The key evidence is a test result—not how the water looks. If chlorine is difficult to hold in a sunny outdoor pool, test CYA before assuming stabilizer is the answer.

Before adding stabilizer

  1. Measure your current CYA level.
  2. Confirm the target recommended for your sanitizer and equipment.
  3. Calculate pool volume accurately.
  4. Use the dosing instructions for the exact stabilizer product.
  5. Retest after the product has circulated as directed.

Avoid guessing because excessive CYA is more difficult to correct than a low reading.
