Spring Pool Opening Checklist
Opening a pool is easier when you restore the physical system before trying to solve every water issue with chemicals. The sequence matters because treatment works better when circulation and filtration are available.
Remove the cover and winter debris
Follow the cover manufacturer's procedure, keep accumulated debris from falling into the pool where practical and clean/store the cover appropriately.
Skim or remove larger debris before expecting the filter to do all the work.
Inspect and restart the equipment
Reassemble and start pumps, filters and other equipment according to the manufacturer's opening procedure. Check for leaks, flow problems or winter damage before moving on.
Restore the water level required for normal operation.
Circulate and test
Once the system is running, allow the water to circulate and test the parameters relevant to your pool. Use those results to create an adjustment plan.
Do not add a pile of opening chemicals before you know what the water actually needs.
Treat visible or measured problems
Address sanitizer, balance, debris, cloudiness or phosphate problems with products appropriate to the diagnosis. Give the filter time to remove material created during cleanup.
Recheck the pool before swimming according to the treatment and sanitizer guidance you follow.
