Why Is My Pool Still Cloudy After Clarifier?
Pool clarifier can help when fine suspended particles are the reason the water looks cloudy. If the cloudiness has another cause—or the filter cannot capture what the clarifier gathers—the water can stay cloudy even after treatment.
Clarifier needs a functioning filter
Clarifier generally makes small particles easier for the filtration system to capture. If the filter is dirty, undersized, bypassing water or not running long enough, treatment can stall.
Check filter condition and circulation before adding another clarifier dose.
Cloudiness may not be a particle problem
Low sanitizer, a developing algae problem, water-balance issues or a recent chemical addition can all create cloudy-looking water. Clarifier does not correct those causes.
Retest the pool and compare the results with what changed immediately before the cloudiness appeared.
More clarifier is not always better
Overtreatment can make troubleshooting harder. Follow the label dose and give the filtration system the recommended time to work.
If the first dose does not improve the pool, diagnose the cause again rather than automatically repeating it.
When flocculant is different
Flocculant is a different cleanup method that gathers suspended material so it can settle for removal. It requires a different process and should not be substituted casually without understanding the equipment and cleanup steps.
Troubleshooting order
- Test sanitizer and water balance.
- Inspect circulation.
- Check and service the filter.
- Review the clarifier dose.
- Identify whether suspended particles are really the problem.

Bottom line: If clarifier did not work, stop treating the symptom and re-check the system that is supposed to remove the particles.
Always follow the product label and your pool equipment manufacturer's instructions.
