Do Phosphates Cause Algae in Pools?

Phosphates are a nutrient source that algae can use, but phosphates do not replace the need to manage sanitizer, circulation and water balance. A pool can have phosphates without an algae bloom when sanitation is maintained properly.

Think of phosphate control as one part of a broader maintenance strategy, not as a substitute for chlorine or another approved sanitizer.

If testing shows elevated phosphates and you want to reduce them, use a purpose-built remover and follow the label.
